From: Gordon R Mcouat <[log in to unmask]> Subject: Postdoctoral Fellowship --------------------------------------------- Postdoctoral Fellowship: HPS/STS and evolutionary theory. The Evolution Studies Group (ESG) at Dalhousie University seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow whose scholarly research would complement its areas of interest: the application of evolutionary (Darwinian) theory to the understanding of larger questions in biology (such as the nature of species, phylogenetic pattern and the process of development) and psychology (e.g., the origins of altruism and consciousness), coupled with the critique of these applications from the perspectives of philosophy/history and sociology of science. The Fellow would be expected to develop an independent research program with the support and counsel of senior ESG members, J. Barkow (Sociology and Anthropology), R. Campbell (Philosophy), F. Doolittle (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), B. Hall (Biology) and G. McOuat (History of Science and Technology and King's College), and to participate in its ongoing discussions. Interaction with bench and computer scientists as well as theoreticians will be facilitated and encouraged. Stipend, guaranteed for two years, is 35,000 Cdn per annum. ESG anticipates that the ideal applicant will have a recent PhD in Philosophy or History and Sociology of Science or in one of the relevant experimental disciplines (evolutionary biology, molecular evolution, evolution and development, behavioral ecology, evolutionary psychology/sociobiology) with a strong evolutionary theoretical focus, and an appetite for interdisciplinary discourse. Deadline for receipt of applications, 1 April, 2001. Opening date June through September, 2001. Send letter, CV, description of research interests and names/phone numbers of three referees to W. F. Doolittle, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada B3H 4H7. E-mail: [log in to unmask] W.
