1. New book by John O. Reiss, Not by Design: Retiring Darwin's Watchmaker.  This book tells how Darwin left the door open for the revival of the argument of design--and at the same time argues for a new conceptual framework that avoids the problematic teleology inherent in Darwin's formulation of natural selection.  http://www.ishpssb.org/listserv/20091101-1.html

2. New book by Sherrie Lynne Lyons, Species, Serpents, Spirits and Skulls: Science at the Margins in the Victorian Age.  This book explores the distinctions between science and pseudoscience, drawing on four examples from the nineteenth-century-sea serpent investigations, spiritualism, phrenology, and Darwin's theory of evolution.  http://www.ishpssb.org/listserv/20091101-2.html

3. The Ecology Program at Federal University of Bahia (Salvador, Brazil) is selecting research fellows.  They seek to fill three Post Doctoral positions in the area of: (A) Epistemology applied to Ecology, (B) Statistical analyses applied to ecology or Ecological Modeling, and (C) Landscape ecology or restoration ecology or conservation ecology.  Applications will be accepted until November 15, 2009http://www.ishpssb.org/listserv/20091101-3.html

5. Applications are solicited for the History of Biology Seminar at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.  The 2010 Seminar will occur 19-26 May.  The topic this year is "From Linneaus to the Encyclopedia of Life" and will examine issues of biodiversity and taxonomic science, with a look at the EoL project housed at the MBL along with historical and philosophical discussions.  Deadline for applications: January 15, 2010http://www.ishpssb.org/listserv/20091101-5.html

6. Applications are solicited for a new graduate track at UMass Boston, "Science in a Changing World."  The program seeks to prepare students to participate in questioning and shaping the direction of scientific and social changes, as well as to teach and engage others to participate in this important endeavor.  http://www.ishpssb.org/listserv/20091101-6.html

7. New book by Lynn M. Morgan, Icons of Life: A Cultural History of Human Embryos. Applications are solicited for a 2010 Workshop in Woods Hole MA, USA, "Problem- and case-based learning about biology-in-society" April 22-25, 2010.  The topic and the processes of this workshop are designed to attract a diverse group of scientists, science educators, and scholars from the various areas of science and technology studies interested in the life sciences and pedagogical innovation. 9. The Obert C. and Grace A. Tanner Humanities Center, at the University of Utah announces its 2010-2011 fellowship competition. Tenured and non-tenured faculty and independent scholars are eligible to apply.  The Tanner Humanities Center will be a co-sponsor of the ISHPSSB 2011 meeting in Salt Lake City.  Deadline for applications: December 1, 2009.
