Unlike most AMSA-sponsored events, the application process is competitive, being open to only 12 students nationwide. The U of M has been successful in sending representation, and often more than one student has been interested in applying. In the past, the process toward applying has been unclear, so we have decided to implement the following process: students interested in applying should notify us by Monday (application due Nov. 20). After we have identified all interested students, we will work with Dean Vercellotti to decide which student our school should nominate, which may require you to send us more information. Since the application process is competitive nationally, we will try to nominate the student that would best represent our medical school. The attendee will be expected to share the knowledge they have gained with our chapter and the rest of the school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. With this in mind, please review the following message if you are interested in global health issues. If you are interested in applying to this PLI, please reply back to Josh Rhein ([log in to unmask]) or Cuong Pham ([log in to unmask]). Thanks and Keep up the good work! First, few models for affecting change regarding complex international problems, such as HIV/AIDS, exist. Second, opportunities for education or mentorship for those concerned with global health problems are scant in the medical school curricula. In order to remedy this gap in medical education, and to enhance the ability of students to advocate for international change, the American Medical Students Association (AMSA) established the Global Health Political Leadership Institute. This three-day Global Health Political Leadership Institute aims to develop a cadre of medical student leaders in global health, both at the national level and in their respective regions. In this three-day seminar, students will: 1) develop and strengthen advocacy skills, 2) educate themselves on fast-changing issues in a global context, and 3) connect with a community of activists from across the country. Twelve students will be chosen on the basis of demonstrated leadership and commitment to international health issues. Each medical school or university can nominate one student for this year's program. To participate, please speak to your dean of students or equivalent. We ask that the school provide the cost of transportation for each student, to demonstrate their commitment to and support of physician leadership. Selected students will arrive the night of Thursday, February 4th and will leave the afternoon of Sunday, Feburary 7th. The application is attached. Applications must be received by November 20, 2003. No applications will be accepted after this date.
