Listserv for the International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology (see the end of this message for directions on how to subscribe and unsubscribe from this listserv) **************************************************************************** Sylvia Culp (1954-2004) It is with great sadness that we must report the death of a close friend and ISHPSSB member. Sylvia Culp passed away on April 23rd after a long fight with breast cancer. She was 50 years old. Sylvia earned two PhDs. The first was in Microbiology from the University of Virginia. After a post-doc in San Diego, she entered the Doctoral Program in Philosophy and Science Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Under the direction of Philip Kitcher, she completed her second PhD in 1992. She joined the Philosophy Department at Western Michigan University later that year and was an Associate Professor at the time of her death. Sylvia's work concerned the nature of experimentation in biology and the philosophy of biology more generally. She wrote a number of well regarded papers in philosophy including "Defending Robustness: The Bacterial Mesosome as a Test Case," "Objectivity in Experimental Inquiry: Breaking Data-Technique Circles," and "Establishing Genotype/Phenotype Relationships: Gene Targeting as an Experimental Approach." As a scholar, a teacher, and a colleague, Sylvia was an exemplar of a worthwhile and balanced academic life. As a friend, Sylvia was generous with her encouragement and unfailing in her optimism and good humor. We always looked forward to seeing Sylvia at meetings, even her last in Milwaukee when she came to say goodbye. Sylvia is survived by her husband, Don, her son, William, and her daughter, Hannah. Our sympathy and very best wishes go out to her family . A memorial service will be held at Western Michigan University on June 12th.
