This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 1st, 2009 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found by Mike Hendrickson on the 26th on Lake Superior near 21st Avenue East. A VARIED THRUSH was found by Shawn Zierman on the 30th at 2215 West 4th Street in Duluth and it has been relocated as recently as the 1st. Brad Snelling found a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on the 25th at the Hartley Nature Center visitor building. A NORTHERN FLICKER has been seen and photographed at a feeder near Chester Bowl in east Duluth. Terry Wiens saw 15 SNOW BUNTINGS on the 28th at the intersection of Jean-Duluth Road (CR 37) and the Riley Road (CR 280).
The NORTHERN HAWK OWL along Airport Road near the Duluth International Airport was relocated on the 30th by Celeste Kawulok. Kyle Tepoel found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 29th along MN Highway 33, 0.25 mile south of Maple Grove Road (CR 6). A SNOWY OWL was seen on the 28th in the Duluth harbor near the Sky Harbor Airport. Peder Svingen saw a second-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL on the 27th at 27th Avenue West near the WLSSD plant. Mike Hendrickson saw GLAUCOUS GULLS and a first-cycle ICELAND GULL on the 31st at the Superior landfill.
GREAT GRAY OWLS have been seen at several locations in the Sax-Zim Bog in the past week, including along the Nichols Lake Road (CR 232) 1.9 miles east of CR 7, along the McDavitt Road (CR 213), 3 to 4 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28), and along CR 7 at the Byrne Greenhouse. NORTHERN HAWK OWLS have been seen along CR 7 at the Sax Road, along the Admiral Road (CR 788) 0.5 mile north of Cranberry Drive, and along the Stickney Road 0.1 mile south of the Sax Road. Steve Foss also found one on the 30th along CR 7 at Keenan Drive (CR 310).
Both AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS are being seen along the McDavitt Road, 4 miles north of the Sax Road. BOREAL CHICKADEES and HOARY REDPOLLS are still being seen at the “deer-rib feeding station” along the Admiral Road (CR 788) 4 miles north of the Sax Road. Mike Hendrickson found three SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on the 27th along CR 7, 1.0 mile south of the Sax Road. SNOW BUNTINGS are being seen at several locations along CR 7, especially near the Sax Road.
Mike Hendrickson found a SPRUCE GROUSE on the 31st in Lake County along MN Highway 1 between mile posts 303 and 304. Norma Malinowski found an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 25th along MN 1, 0.25 mile north of the Little Lake Road (FR 429), and she saw a flock of 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 24th in Ely along the Trezona Trail on the southwest side of Miner's Lake. Howard Weinberg relocated an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 30th at his home at 487 Valley Road (CR 11), about three miles west of Two Harbors.
Greg Seegert found 30 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on the 31st along Aitkin County Road 16, including 27 birds 0.5 mile south of MN Highway 210 and three birds 2 miles north of MN 210.
