This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, January 15th 2009.
In Duluth, a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found on the 10th on Lake Superior at 21st Avenue East. this is almost certainly the same individual that has been present on the lake since late December.
On the 15th, there was a report of a possible GYRFALCON at the southeast corner of Minneapolis St. Paul airport along state highway 5 at Post Road.
A BOREAL OWL was discovered on the 11th in east Duluth along the Old North Shore Road near Alseth Road of Stoney Point but it was gone the next day.
The NORTHERN HAWK OWL near the Duluth International Airport was relocated on the 12th at Rice Lake Road, half a mile south of Airport Road. Another was at the junction of Jean-Duluth Road and Beyer Road on the 11th. And up the shore, a GREAT GRAY OWL was seen on the 10th along state Highway 61, half a mile north of Ryan Road. Great Gray and Northern Hawk owls continue to be seen in the Sax-Zim Bog of St. Louis County. Check especially along county road 7, county road 28, and McDavitt Road.
In Lake County, an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was found on the 8th along the walking trail at Lighthouse Point in Two Harbors and it was still present on the 10th.
In northern St. Louis County, a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was seen on the 9th near the Ely golf course along Lookout Ridge Road.
And in the southern half of the state, many callers have reported RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, BROWN CREEPER, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, HOARY REDPOLL, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL.
