Dear Minnesotans and others,

I was there and I can tell you that seeing the Solitaire was nothing shy of fantastic.

I do want to mention that that bird seemed to behave as though he were hanging around. He thrice returned to this patch of leafless bushes and trees that lie just west of the house.

We used the a Garmin GPS to find the address and and came up with 1759 Lookout Ridge Rd. This is in fact not the address of the property on which the bird was seen but what the Garmin would like it to be.

I don't think that anyone should be upset in our reporting of the equivalent to coordinates. After all, that is a public road maintained with Minnesotan (your) tax dollars.

Google map and directions

We tried to meet and talk to the owners of this blue house but no one was home.

Peace and good birding to all!

Thanks for the info; I wasn't with them and don't usually bird Ely (I'm from Britt).  If anyone responds railing about my vague directions, I'll give them your directions.
I have the address of the house, but didn't think I would post that without the owner's permission.

Thanks, Karen.

To be a bit more specific, Cty. 21 is Central Avenue in Ely. If you're coming into Ely from Tower on Hwy. 169, turn right on Central Avenue (first stoplight) and drive through town heading south. Lookout Ridge Road is at the top of the hill on your left as you pass the golf course.

If you're coming up from Silver Bay on Hwy. 1, turn left when you come to the Sheridan Street/Hwy. 169 stop sign (Ely's main drag) and drive most of the way through town, taking a left on Central (third and final stoplight from).

I just received a call from the group of Indiana/Illinois/Michigan/Wisconsin
birders I have been birding with yesterday and today indicating they just found
a Townsend's Solitaire in Ely.

This was about 1:45 PM just after I left them to head home (!).

It was located just off Cty Rd 21.  It was on Lookout Ridge Road on the top of
the hill.

We also had excellent looks at a hoary redpoll feeding under a feeder with many
pine grosbeaks in McKinley, Mn (off county hwy 135 between Gilbert and Biwabik)
