1. The American Philosophical Society announces a new book, Descended
from Darwin: Insights into the History of Evolutionary Studies,
1900-1970, Joe Cain and Michael Ruse (eds.). This volume has its
origins in a conference, held 22-23 October 2004 at the American
Philosophical Society Library, Philadelphia. The main focus was on
evolutionary studies in America before, during, and after the famous
"evolutionary synthesis" of the 1930s and 1940s. Papers in this
volume are freely available for download.

2. CFP: The Geitonas School announces a Darwin 2009 conference,
"Teaching Evolution: Theoretical and Pedagogical Issues," 7-8
November 2009. Experts in the history of science, philosophy of
science, and science education as well as teachers are invited to
participate. Papers that focus on theoretical or pedagogical issues
related to the teaching of evolution are welcome. Deadline for
extended summaries: June 20, 2009.

3. Scientific Research and Essays (SRE) solicits submissions from all
areas of science, medicine, agriculture and engineering. SRE is also
seeking qualified reviewers to serve as members of the review board

4. Indiana University Press is pleased to announce the recent publication
of Owen's Ape and Darwin's Bulldog: Beyond Darwinism and Creationism
by Christopher E. Cosans. With the debate between Richard Owen and
Thomas Huxley on the differences between the ape and human brains as
its focus, this book explores several ways in which philosophical
ideas and scientific practice influenced the discussion of evolution
in the years before and after Darwin's publication of Origin of
Species.

7. Workshop, "Open Questions on the Origins of Life," Palacio
Miramar, San Sebastian - Donostia, Spain, May 20-23, 2009. The
overall idea behind this workshop is to tackle a number of key
questions about the origin of life that still remain unanswered,
attempt to clarify why it is so, and to discuss how to progress in
our efforts to answer these questions. Registration is still open,

8. The Philosophy Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
is excited to announce the first biennial Philosophy of Biology @
Madison (POBAM) Workshop, May 21-23, 2010, Madison, Wisconsin. The

receive constructive feedback from interested colleagues, and for
other participants to become acquainted with new work in the field.
