The last wave of migration is coming through, and mornings this week are noisy with the din of singing birds. This will soon end as the birds get down to business raising new families. Please be sure to report all nesting evidence you see, and I encourage you to participate in the Minnesota Breeding Bird Atlas project by adopting a block to survey.
From Lake of the Woods County, Dan Williams reported the sighting of two AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS near the entrance to Zippel Bay State Park, and an AMERICAN 3-TOED WOODPECKER in Beltrami Island State Forest a half mile from Gustafson Camp. On May 28, he saw a SHORT-EARED OWL at the intersection of MN 72 with CR 35, and WESTERN KINGBIRDS were found at Morris Point on Lake of the Woods. Martin Kehoe reported a SPRUCE GROUSE at his cabin deep in the Beltrami Island State Forest. Gretchen Mehmel reported a SCARLET TANAGER coming to the Norris Camp feeders this week.
Beth Siverhus in Roseau County this week saw a COOPER'S HAWK, SORA, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD in Warroad.
Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported SCARLET TANAGER on May 22, and on May 23, he had 15 warbler species and a PEREGRINE FALCON at his place near Lancaster. The MOU weekend trip lead by Kim Eckert found an AMERICAN BLACK DUCK on May 22. At Lake Bronson State Park, they found a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER .
Gretchen Mehmel reported that an ORCHARD ORIOLE is hanging out at a home northeast of Skime in Beltrami County.
On May 21, Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD along CR 38 in Marshall County at a mailbox numbered 26547. I don't believe that anyone has re-located that bird. The MOU trip found a NORTHERN GOSHAWK and a CALIFORNIA GULL at Agassiz NWR on May 23. Neither has been sighted since. Today, May 28, two NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were heard near West Gate within Agassiz NWR. In addition, twenty warbler species were found during a couple of hours at Headquarters; also a PHILADELPHIA VIREO, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and a GREAT HORNED OWL on the nest were seen. On May 24, I found a lone SNOW GOOSE at the Warren wastewater treatment ponds along with EARED GREBES, WILSON'S PHALAROPES, and RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.
The MOU group found a HENSLOW'S SPARROW singing a couple of hundred yards north of CR 3 along the old unpaved Pembina Trail that runs less than a quarter mile inside Pennington County at that point. On May 23, they saw a SHORT-EARED OWL along CR 20.
Bruce Flaig in southern Polk County reported an ORCHARD ORIOLE at the feeder on May 27. The MOU trip found a late ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK just west of the Pennington County line on May 24.
Colleen Nelson saw two BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES in Lake Park, Becker County, and a SCARLET TANAGER at Tamarac NWR on May 24.
Marshal Howe discovered a LARK SPARROW near Dorset in Hubbard County on May 26.
Alma Ronningen in Otter Tail County reported tonight that the female LAZULI BUNTING in her yard was last seen on May 27, and the male departed earlier in the week. On May 26, she saw a CANADA WARBLER in the yard.
