This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 28th, 2009 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Five RED-THROATED LOONS were seen by Jan and Larry Kraemer and others on the 28th at the Park Point Recreational Area in Duluth. Mike Hendrickson found an adult PARASITIC JAEGER here on the 25th, and relocated the ARCTIC TERN on the 23rd at Hearding Island. He saw the NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on the 24th near the bathhouse, and in west Duluth he heard a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER off the railroad tracks along the St. Louis River below Morgan Park. Doug Kieser and Mark Ochs saw a RED KNOT on the 23rd at the 40th Avenue West Erie Pier area in Duluth, as well as an out-of-place BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER the Park Point Recreational Area, east of the playground.

Jan Kraemer had a FIELD SPARROW on the 27th in her yard along Maple Grove Road in Duluth. Uwe Kausch found a GREAT EGRET on the 28th at his home on the Wildwood Road, a mile west of the Homestead Road (CR 42) in Duluth Township.

Mike Steffes heard two BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS on the 22nd on the north end of Tettegouche State Park near the crest of the service road. He also heard three in Cook County on the 23rd along the Superior Hiking Trail at Oberg Mountain. Sid Stivland saw five LONG-TAILED DUCKS over the weekend on Lake Superior at Lutsen in Cook County.

Connie Brunell and Susan Schumacher heard six YELLOW RAILS and a NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW on the 27th at the McGregor Marsh along MN Highway 65, a mile south of MN Highway 200 in Aitkin County. Steve and Jo Blanich found a WHIMBREL on the 22nd along Aitkin County Road 15, about 3.5 miles north of the town of Aitkin.
