Weather in the northwest seems more like late September as I write this. The sun shines, but temperatures are cool. Fall migration is right on the doorstep, and some species are already getting ready to go.
In Marshall County on July 28, Cliff Steinhauer saw two SHORT-EARED OWLS along 290th St - one was a miles west of MN 32, the other a half mile east of MN 32.
Danielle Olson , reporting from Rydell NWR in Polk County mentioned RED-NECKED GREBE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER among the species seen at the refuge this week. Sandy Aubol saw EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and RED-HEADED WOODPECKER along the Greenway in East Grand Forks on July 28.
Nancy Jackson, in Hubbard County on July 25 saw three PIED-BILLED GREBES along CR 13.
In Wadena County, Nancy Jackson saw 9 TURKEY VULTURES and two WESTERN KINGBIRDS near a power station.
At Glendalough State Park in Otter Tail County, Charlene Nelson saw COMMON LOON, three FORSTER'S TERNS, EASTERN PHOEBE, and GRAY CATBIRD at Molly Stark Lake.
