This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, October 1st, 2009 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Two SMITH'S LONGSPURS were found by Jan Green on the 1st at the cemetery along Old North Shore Road (CR 290) about a half mile east of the Homestead Road (CR 42) in Duluth Township. Kim Eckert saw a VESPER SPARROW on the 29th in the same area along the Old North Shore Road.
Kim and others saw a PACIFIC LOON and a WESTERN GREBE on the 26th at the Park Point Recreational Area. Linda Sparling found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on the 27th at Bayfront Park. Cameron Rutt found a PIPING PLOVER on the 24th on Park Point near the Sky Harbor Airport. Peder Svingen saw 13 CACKLING GEESE on the 1st on the ball fields at the Park Point Recreational Area. Several observers continue to report multiple PARASITIC JAEGERS and a LONG-TAILED JAEGER at Wisconsin Point.
In Cook County, Cameron Rutt found a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on the 27th along the Superior Hiking Trail at Carlton Peak. He saw another TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE on the 29th flying over the Gunflint Trail (CR 12) near Grand Marais, and he had a flyover DICKCISSEL on the 30th at Hovland. Anna Peterson saw a BOREAL CHICKADEE and 149 migrating SANDHILL CRANES on the 29th from Pincusion Mountain in Grand Marias. Jan Green saw a NORTHERN PINTAIL in Grand Marias on the 30th.
Single SWAINSON'S HAWKS were seen at Hawk Ridge on the 28th and the 29th. SANDHILL CRANES have been seen almost daily, including a count of 154 on the 29th.
