This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, November 26th, 2009 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A first-cycle CALIFORNIA GULL was seen by Mike Hendrickson and Peder Svingen on the 21st on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry, along with 11 THAYER'S GULLS, three ICELAND GULLS, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, three GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, and three GLAUCOUS GULLS. Peder Svingen saw a first-cycle GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL and a first-cycle ICELAND GULL at Canal Park on the 26th, and several observers reported LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, and THAYER’S GULLS at Canal Park over the weekend of the 21st.
The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was relocated by Sarah Glesner in Duluth on the 22nd at 21st Avenue East. Andrew Longtin also saw the bird later in the day, along with a BLACK SCOTER and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER. Ann and Scott Wischert saw a WESTERN GREBE on the 21st in the Superior harbor from the Perkin’s parking lot.
David Alexander saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 21st along Lake County Road 2 just north of Kane Lake Road, another along Forest Highway 11, 4.3 miles east of the Stony River Forest Road, and another bird on the Stony River Forest Road, 2.8 miles south of MN Highway 1. He also saw individual SPRUCE GROUSE at the north and south ends of the Stony River Forest Road, and along CR 2, one mile south of MN Highway 1.
Joe Conley saw a GREAT GRAY OWL on the 23rd in Aitkin County along CR 18, just west of 320th Place. He also relocated a NORTHERN HAWK OWL near the junction of CR 18 and CR 5 that was found by Warren Nelson and Bill Stauffer on the 21st. Butch Ukura saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 23rd along the Dump Road (450th Street), 0.3 mile east of CR 3. Warren Nelson found two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS on the 26th along CR 5, 2.8 miles south of CR 18. A SNOWY OWL was seen on the 25th along US Highway 169, a half mile south of CR 54 and CR 56.
Cameron Rutt and Sarah Glesner saw several species of interest in Koochiching County on the 19th. They saw a GREAT GRAY OWL along Pine Island Road just north of CR 30, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL, AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER, two BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, and six BOREAL CHICKADEES along the first mile of the Toumey-Williams Road north of CR 30, and another NORTHERN HAWK OWL along CR 31 about halfway between Big Falls and MN Highway 65.
