This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, December 10th, 2009
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The third-cycle SLATY-BACKED GULL was relocated on the 4th at Canal Park
in Duluth, but I have not heard any reports since then. Three GREAT
BLACK-BACKED GULLS and six THAYER'S GULLS were seen by Mike Hendrickson
and Peder Svingen on the 5th at Canal Park. Mike also saw a WHITE-WINGED
SCOTER at 21st Avenue East, a late PIED-BILLED GREBE in the harbor at
36th Street on Park Point, and a late HOODED MERGANSER at the Park Point
Recreation Area boat launch.

Alison Clarke reported a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 4th at her
feeders at 226 Ridgewood Road in east Duluth. Gary Kuyava also has a
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and a late RUSTY BLACKBIRD at his feeders in the
upper Woodland neighborhood.

Doug Kieser and Jim Otto saw single GREAT GRAY OWLS in Aitkin County on
the 6th along CR 18 at Pietz's Road (320th Place) and 0.6 mile west of
Pietz’s Road. They also saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL at US Highway 169 and CR
18. Warren Nelson saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 6th along CR 18, a mile
west of CR 5, and another along CR 1 north of the diversion ditch bridge
where the pavement ends. David Alexander saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the
6th along CR 5, three miles south of CR 18. He saw another NORTHERN HAWK
OWL in St. Louis County along US Highway 2, two miles east of MN Highway
200. Sarah Glesner reported NORTHERN HAWK OWLS on the 6th in Lake County
along CR 2, 1.9 miles south of FR 824, and along the Stony River Forest
Road, 2.2 and 8.2 miles north of the Whyte Road.

The Duluth Christmas Bird Count will be held on Saturday, December 19,
2009. The Two Harbors Christmas Bird Count will be held on Sunday,
December 20. Anyone interested in participating in either count should
