This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, December 10th 2009.

The SLATY-BACKED GULL was still at Canal Park in Duluth on the 4th, as were three GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS and six THAYER'S GULLS. Another SLATY-BACKED GULL was seen on the 7th at Black Dog Lake in Bloomington, Hennepin County though access to the site is currently restricted.

A male HARLEQUIN DUCK was at Point Douglas Park in Washington County on the 10th. This is very near Prescott, WI.

A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen in Aitkin County on the 6th along county road 18 at its junction with Pietz's Road and another was half a mile west of there. Also in Aitkin County, NORTHERN HAWK OWLS were seen at US Highway 169 and county road 18, along county road 18 a mile west of county road 5, along county road 5 three miles south of 18, and along county road 1 north of where the pavement ends. Hawk Owls are also being reported in the counties of Lake of the Woods, Crow Wing, St. Louis, and Lake. On December 7, a SNOWY OWL was between Orleans and Humboldt in Kittson County.

In Minneapolis, a first-year ICELAND GULL was on Lake Calhoun on December 6th.

On the 3rd, a CAROLINA WREN was at a feeding station in Orono in western Hennepin County, but it has not been seen since.

A VARIED THRUSH was at the Eastman Nature Center in western Hennepin County on the 4th. Another was in Good Thunder, Blue Earth County on the 10th, but I have no specific location.

And finally, an immature BLUE GROSBEAK was reported December 8th at Wargo Nature Center in Anoka County.
