1. CFP for conference: "Science, Knowledge, and Democracy,"
hosted by the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, April 1-3,
2011. The goal of the conference is to bring together scholars
working in moral and political philosophy, social epistemology,
philosophy of science, and related areas to reflect broadly on the
relationships between science, knowledge, and democracy. Abstract

2. Online graduate course in Biomedical Ethics, offered as part
of the new "Science in a Changing World" graduate track at
UMass Boston. Contemporary moral debates regarding new and
emerging technologies, as well as now-classic debates such as
end of life treatment, stem-cell research and prenatal screening.
Exploration of basic methods in reasoning, social analysis and
philosophical methods through critical thinking about ethical dilemmas
in biomedicine and their contexts. Students of all backgrounds are
welcome. Dates of class:

4. White Rose IPBio Symposium and Summer School,
"Intellectual Property and the Biosciences," Devonshire
Hall, University of Leeds, 7-8 July 2010. With the recent overturning
by a US court of patents on genes associated with breast cancer,
questions about the role of intellectual property in the biological
sciences are high on the agenda. This meeting, comprising a
one-day symposium and a half-day summer school, and bringing together
international experts in law, science policy, history, philosophy,
sociology and other disciplines, will aim to clarify key issues and
explore ways forward. Deadline for submission for summer school:

5. PSBio (Philosophical Foundations for Systems Biology)
announces a PhD fellowship in contemporary philosophy of
science/philosophy of biology based at the University of Oslo, Norway
(in cooperation with researchers at the universities of Copenhagen and
Helsinki). The application deadline is
July 15, 2010. Both
Nordic and international applications are welcomed.
