This listserv sends out brief descriptions only. For further
details, follow the link listed.
Please send me items to post to the list that would be of
interest to Society members: position announcements,
postdoctoral announcements, grant and funding opportunities,
conference announcements, calls for papers, and brief queries on
research topics. The sooner you send me something, the more
likely that I will be able to have it posted before its
deadline.
Thanks!

1. Call for papers for conference, "The Authority of
Science," 8-10 April 2011, University of Sydney, Australia, 4th
Sydney-Tilburg conference on the philosophy of science. From
climate change to the classification of illegal drugs the extent to
which scientific opinion should prevail over other voices in
determining public policy is hotly contested. What is it about the
nature of science that confers epistemic authority on scientific
opinion, and what are the scope and limits of that authority?
Abstracts due:
15th October 2010.

2. The History of Science and Technology Department at Johns
Hopkins University invites applications for the Bo Jung and Soon Young
Kim Professorship in East Asian Science and Technology, starting 1
July 2011. Rank is open; they encourage applications from
scholars at all levels. Review of applications will begin on
January 10, 2011, and will continue until the position is
filled.
3. Call for papers for conference, "Metaphysics and the
Philosophy of Science," 13-15 May 2011, University of Toronto.
This conference will examine ground-level debates about metaphysics
within the philosophy of physics and the philosophy of biology, and
broader methodological questions about the role of metaphysics in the
philosophy of science. Participation is open and welcome from all
parties to these questions: from those who hold that metaphysics must
have a place within the philosophy of science, to those who hold it
should not. Deadline for essays:
January 10, 2011.

4. Situating Science is soliciting workshop proposals for the
timeframe of Jan. 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012. Situating Science is a
SSHRC-funded Strategic Knowledge Cluster, mandated to build networks
among scholars, Canadian and international, in the various disciplines
engaged in the humanistic and social study of science and technology,
and to engage the work of these scholars with the wider Canadian
public. Workshop topics should fall under one of the four themes
of the Cluster: Science and its Publics, Historical Epistemology and
Ontology (including philosophy of science), Material Culture and
Scientific/Technological Practices, Geography and Sites of Knowing.
Deadline for submissions:
October 1, 2010.

5. The Sydney Centre for the Foundations of Science (SCFS)
invites applications for one-semester visiting fellowships at The
University of Sydney, for either second semester (August to November)
2011 or first semester (February to May) 2012. SCFS sponsors work into
the logical, philosophical and historical foundations of science. They
are hoping to receive applications from leading historians and
philosophers of science (including the special sciences and biomedical
sciences) at any post-PhD career stage. Deadline for
applications:
30 October 2010. http://www.ishpssb.org/listserv/20100906-5.html
6. Frederick Grinnell's
Everyday Practice of Science: Where
Intuition and Passion Meet Objectivity and Logic (Oxford
University Press) has been selected as one of the six finalists in
competition for the 2010 Royal Society Prize for Science Books.
