This is the Duluth Birding Report for September 16th, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Another PRAIRIE FALCON was banded by Frank Nicoletti on the 12th at Moose Valley in Lakewood Township north of Duluth. Frank also saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 10th. The first GOLDEN EAGLE of the fall season was seen at Hawk Ridge on the 16th by Karl Bardon and others, and a SWAINSON'S HAWK was seen on the 12th. Impressive numbers of migrating BLUE JAYS are being seen all along the North Shore, including a record-high count of 7,612 on the 14th at Hawk Ridge. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen at the overlook on the 16th and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen on the 12th and 13th.
Jan Green saw an adult LESSER-BLACKED GULL and 44 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS at Agate Bay in Two Harbors on the 13th. Kim Eckert saw a WESTERN KINGBIRD at Agate Bay on the 13th. Chris Elmgren reported three BLACK SCOTERS on the 15th at Artist's Point in Grand Marias.
Kim Eckert and Paul Egeland saw a probable PARASITIC JAEGER on the 16th at the Park Point Recreation Area. Erik Bruhnke also saw a PARASITIC JAEGER at Wisconsin Point on the 15th.
