What a wonderful week it has been for mid-October, but the year moves along, and from the species reported, one can see that we are fast approaching "winter" birding. Herb Dingmann was birding in Northwest Minnesota last weekend, and reported a few SNOW GEESE in Lake of the Woods, Roseau, Kittson, Marshall, Pennington, and Red Lake Counties, and CACKLING GEESE in most of the same locations. BALD EAGLES, COMMON RAVENS, and BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES feeding on road kill were reported by many people in several locations. Top number of those species was seen by Shelley Steva in Red Lake County, where she saw a group of 9 BALD EAGLES and 20 COMMON RAVENS feeding on a dead deer just south of the Pennington County line. FOX SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROWS, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were reported from several counties throughout the area.

On October 9,Herb Dingmann reported TUNDRA SWANS, HORNED GREBE, WESTERN GREBE and BONAPARTE'S GULL on Lake of the Woods at Zippel Bay State Park. Also at the park was a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER at the entrance to the park.

At the Badger WTP in Roseau County on October 9, Herb Dingmann found a ROSS'S GOOSE and AMERICAN PIPIT. At the Roseau WTP he saw a BONAPARTE'S GULL.

At Lake Bronson State Park in Kittson County, Herb found a PALM WARBLER on October 10.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen by Herb Dingmann at the Clearbrook WTP on October 10. Other species seen in Clearwater County included NORTHERN SHRIKE, HERMIT THRUSH, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.

Herb Dingmann discovered a HORNED GREBE, and an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at the Warren WTP on October 9, and a HERMIT THRUSH at Old Mill State Park, all in Marshall County.

Chris Merkord found many species of waterfowl at the East Grand Forks wastewater treatment ponds on October 10 including 4 SNOW GEESE and 2 BUFFLEHEADS. Sandy Aubol reported HARRIS'S SPARROW in the yard in East Grand Forks on that day.

TRUMPETER SWANS were seen in Red Lake County near Huot, and an immature WINTER WREN and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW were seen in the woods near the Old Treaty Crossing park.

In Hubbard County, Marshall Howe reported several small groups of GRAY JAYS between Lake Alice and Lake George on October 12. On the 12th , he also reported AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS in that county.

Wilkin County sightings by Jack Jonas at Rothsay WMA on October 12 included 75 SANDHILL CRANES, a GREAT HORNED OWL, and an EASTERN MEADOWLARK.

Thanks to Brad Hopkins, Chris Merkord, Herb Dingmann, Jack Jonas, Marshall Howe, Sandy Aubol, and Shelley Steva for their reports.
