This is the Minnesota Birding Report for December 23rd, 2010.
In Duluth, an adult SLATY-BACKED GULL was found on the 18th by Karl Bardon and Peder Svingen. It was last reported on the 23rd from Canal Park along with a few THAYER'S GULLS, ICELAND GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
On the 18th, a HARLEQUIN DUCK was at the mouth of the French River in Duluth. On the same day during the Fergus Falls CBC in Otter Tail County, a HARLEQUIN DUCK was discovered by Steve Millard near the railroad trestle in downtown Fergus Falls.
Two SNOWY OWLS were in the Duluth Harbor on the 18th.
On the 19th, a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was at 15th Avenue and 8th Street in Two Harbors, Lake County. On the 17th, two and possibly three TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES were reported from Lac qui Parle County at the Hantho Beach area at the end of county road 68.
On December 17th, Beth Siverhus counted five NORTHERN HAWK OWLS along state highway 72 in Lake of the Woods and Beltrami counties.
In the Sax-Zim Bog, two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS are being seen along Stone Lake Road about a mile east of St. Louis County Road 7. Nearby, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen on the 20th along McDavitt Road, two miles north of Sax Road and another was found north of Sax Road just east of Admiral Road. And a hawk owl was along US Highway 2, six-and-a-quarter miles northwest of Floodwood.
Two GREAT GRAY OWLS were on McDavitt Road about four miles north of Sax Road, and two more were in Aitkin County along the Hedbom Forest Road, 2.9 and 5.4 miles west of the Floodwood.
