This is the Duluth Birding Report for December 30th, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The HARLEQUIN DUCK at the mouth of the French River was relocated on the 24th by Jan Green and seen again on the 28th. THAYER'S GULLS, ICELAND GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS continue to be reported from Canal Park in Duluth as recently as the 28th.

Two TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES were seen in Two Harbors on the 24th, with one relocated at 15th Avenue and 8th Street and another seen on the 300 block of 2nd Avenue. A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was found by Sarah Glesner and Katie Brey on the 25th along the Stony River Forest Road, 8.3 miles south of MN Highway 1. They also saw at least eight BOREAL CHICKADEES between MN 1 and the Whyte Road. I have reports that the Stony River Forest Road is currently drivable with a high clearance vehicle, but is heavily rutted and slippery.

Thirty-seven species were found on the Ely CBC on the 26th, including a SPRUCE GROUSE and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER at the snowmobile crossing on the Spruce Road, two GREAT GRAY OWLS, one off MN Highway 1, 0.7 mile south of the Spruce Road and another along the Birch Lake Road south of CR 120, an AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER and five BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS along the Cloquet Line near the Low Lake boat access, 17 BOREAL CHICKADEES mostly along the Spruce Road and MN Highway 1, and a VARIED THRUSH in Ely along Main Street near Pillow Rock.

Chris West saw a GREAT GRAY OWL in the Sax-Zim Bog on the 28th along CR 16 between CR 25 and CR 5, and a NORTHERN HAWK OWL along the McDavitt Road (CR 233), about 2 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). Steve Weston saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 25th along the Stone Lake Road (CR 319) about 2 miles east of CR 7.
