This is the Duluth Birding Report for December 9th, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Several observers have reported multiple THAYER'S GULLS, ICELAND GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS of various ages at Canal Park and at the Superior Entry during the past week, as well as several hybrids. Karl Bardon saw a first-cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on the 5th at the Superior Entry. Karl also photographed a BARROW’S X COMMON GOLDENEYE and a HOODED MERGANSER X COMMON GOLDENEYE hybrid at Canal Park on the 5th.
Phill Toffoli saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER in Duluth along the Martin Road (CR 10) near the Old Vermillion Trail between the Arnold Road and Woodland Avenue. Cindy Edwardson saw a flock of about 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 4th at East Arrowhead Road and Vermilion Road in Duluth. Bill Tefft saw a flock of more than 70 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Ely on the 7th on the 500 block of Chapman Street. Bob Myers saw a flock of 43 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 5th in Silver Bay, and a flock of about 50 was seen along 3rd Avenue in Two Harbors.
A GREAT GRAY OWL was found on the 9th by Sparky Stensaas in the Sax-Zim Bog along the McDavitt Road (CR 233), about 3.5 to 4 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28). Jeremy Ridlbauer saw a NORTHERN HAWK OWL on the 7th in Cook County along MN Highway 61, 1.5 miles east of Naniboujou Lodge.
