It looks as if we will have a white Christmas in the northwest this year. Perhaps that will encourage all of us to get out , play in the snow, and go birding. Fewer birds were reported this week, probably due in part to the snowy weather and bad travelling conditions, and partly due to this busy season.

On November 30, Nancy Jackson saw 30 COMMON MERGANSERS in Walker, Cass County.

In Otter Tail County, Nancy saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on November 29 and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on November 30. Alma Ronningen had two COMMON REDPOLLS in her yard on November 30, and on December 2, one AMERICAN ROBIN and 4 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were still to be seen in her yard.

Connie Norheim observer two mature BALD EAGLES flying over the Moorhead Center Mall in Clay County on November 26.

Sandy Aubol saw a MERLIN and a NORTHERH SHRIKE in East Grand Forks, Polk County on November 24.She saw a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK fly through her yard on November 26. On the 30th, a BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD appeared at the feeder. December 2, a female NORTHERN CARDINAL, and 55 to 60 COMMON REDPOLLS were observed in the area. Another NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen by Shelley Steva 5 miles north of Erskine on November 27, while a dark phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen along US 59 a miles north of Erskine.

Connie Cox in Clearwater County had a female BREWER'S BLACKBIRD at her feeder near Itasca State Park.

Beth Siverhus reported seeing the NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Beltrami County along MN 72 at mile marker 48 on November 29. BALD EAGLES and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were observed in both Beltrami and Lake of the Woods Counties that day.

In Kittson County on November 25 an injured NORTHERN KESTREL was found and sent to the raptor center for treatment.

One SHARP-TAILED GROUSE was seen along CR 1 in Lake of the Woods County on November 29.

Thanks to Alma Ronningen, Beth Siverhus, Connie Cox, Connie Norheim, Nancy Jackson, Sandy Aubol, and Shelley Steva for their reports.
