This is the Duluth Birding Report for February 17th, 2010 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A SPRUCE GROUSE was found by Paul Roisen and David Lambeth on the 17th along Lake County Road 2, about two miles north of the Sand River. They saw a flock of about 200 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 16th in the town of Meadowlands, and a flock of 400 to 500 in Ely on the 17th along Main Street near Pillow Rock. They also saw more than 50 EVENING GROSBEAKS in Winton on the 17th. A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was seen near a feeder in Ely on the 11th and one was heard singing on the 15th along CR 88 northeast of Ely.
Sparky Stensaas saw a flock of about 800 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 15th along Northfield Street near Woodland Avenue in Duluth. Molly Evans saw a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL on the 10th on the 2900 block of Greysolon Street. Peder Svingen saw a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, two GLAUCOUS GULLS, and two THAYER'S GULLS on the 12th at Canal Park in Duluth.
Jan Green saw four LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 17th at Stoney Point, and a HOARY REDPOLL on the 12th along the Old North Shore Road (CR 290). David Brislance photographed a HOARY REDPOLL on the 16th in Cook County near Lutsen.
Kelly Larson saw a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER in the Sax-Zim Bog on the 16th along the McDavitt Road (CR 233) about 2 miles north of the Sax Road (CR 28), and an unidentified SWAN flying over the Arkola Road (CR 52). Nate Popkin saw a flock of 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS on the 15th near Grand Lake.
