This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 31st, 2011 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was found on the 31st by Shawn Conrad on Clover Lane in Grand Rapids, just east of the Arby's restaurant. Shawn also saw a flock of 26 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS along Park Drive in LaPrairie.
An “AUDUBON'S” YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was seen on the 27th and 28th at Lighthouse Point in Two Harbors. Four LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on the 29th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors.
In Duluth, 536 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS flew by the West Skyline Hawk Count on the 30th, and about 400 flew by on the 24th. Dave Benson saw a flock of 20 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 31st along Woodland Avenue, about 0.5 mile south of the entrance to Hartley Nature Center. Carl Sack reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on the 30th at Hartley Nature Center south of Hartley Pond.
New arrivals in the area during the past week include PIED-BILLED GREBE, GREAT BLUE HERON, TURKEY VULTURE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and BELTED KINGFISHER.
