This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, March 3, 2011 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Due probably to the unseasonably cold weather this week, sightings have been spotty. Several observers have reported HORNED LARKS, LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and SNOW BUNTINGS in open country in a variety of counties. Since owls are starting to go about the business of nesting, there have been some reports of owls being seen this week also.

Steve Patterson observed the mating of a pair of BALD EAGLES in Bemidji, Beltrami County on February 26.

In Red Lake County, Steve Dahl saw a GREAT HORNED OWL in his yard on March 1.

From Polk County, Sandy Aubol reported a BALD EAGLE flying over East Grand Forks on February 28. Bruce Flaig reported that a BARRED OWL returned to his yard in southern Polk County on February 26.

Bob Ekblad relocated a flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in the town of Mahnomen on March 1.

Marshall Howe reported 3 PINE GROSBEAKS at Dorset in south central Hubbard County. Also seen along MN 64 between Motley and Akeley were three light phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS.

Thanks to Bob Ekblad, Sandy Aubol, Steve Dahl, and Steve Patterson for their reports.
