Finally a week that feels like summer in the northwest. Gardens are starting to grow, and perennials are in blossom everywhere. Birds are going about the business of raising families, and the strident sounds of young ones are beginning to be heard.
Charlene Nelson observed a pair of TRUMPETER SWANS in Otter Tail County in the area where CR 8 and CR 67 are concurrent. Alma Ronningen reported that all sorts of summer residents are being heard in her yard. Among the species mentioned were SANDHILL CRANES, SORA, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, CEDAR WAXWINGS, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. She also reported that the OSPREY eggs have hatched, but no word on how many offspring. On June 9, Betsy Beneke reported that three plegadis IBIS flew over I-94 near mile marker 76 south of Fergus Falls.
In Polk County, Dave Lambeth of Grand Forks, ND reported that a nestling was visible in the nest of a PILEATED WOODPECKER in a tree on the Minnesota side of the Red River. This nest hole can be seen from hole 15 of the Lincoln Park Drive Frisbee golf course across the river. Sandy Aubol reported a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO in her yard in East Grand Forks on June 9.
In the course of a BBS, I saw a SHORT-EARED OWL in eastern Pennington County on June 9 .
Four SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen in the Marshall County portion of another BBS on June 11.
