This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 21,
2011 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

It appears to have been a quiet week for birding probably due to the
heat which dampened all activity. As I compile this report ,
temperatures have returned to more normal values, for how long no one
knows.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County found a downy young NORTHERN HARRIER on
July 19.

Heidi Hughes was birding around the flood control impoundment which
straddles the Marshall - Polk County line north of the Wetlands, Pines ,
and Prairies Audubon Sanctuary on July 17. There she found baby
ducklings of several species including MALLARDS and CANVASBACKS. About
30 juvenile AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, SANDHILL CRANES, KILLDEER, SPOTTED
SANDPIPERS, WILSON'S SNIPE, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, WESTERN MEADOWLARKS, and
BOBOLINKS were seen around the area. Also present was a BALD EAGLE and
two SWAINSON'S HAWKS.Elsewhere in Polk County, on July 19, Shelley Steva
found both EASTERN KINGBIRDS and WESTERN KINGBIRDS along Polk CR 252.

Shelley Steva reported that a TURKEY VULTURE could be seen circling over
Thief River Falls, Pennington County, on July 19.

Thanks to Heidi Hughes, Larry Wilebski, and Shelley Steva for their
reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at [log in to unmask] OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, July 26,
2011.
