This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 28,
2011 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

This has been a rather typical summer week in the northwest - a few
sunny days, a few storms, some sweltering humid days, and some much more
pleasant. It seems that most birds are busy bringing up the "kids" as we
see family groups everywhere.

Sandy Aubol in western Polk County at East Grand Forks reported a female
NORTHERN CARDINAL in her yard on July 24. Other visitors included a
family of MERLINS and a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD . Heidi Hughes
reported a family of six LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES that included 4 juveniles
near the intersection of 170th St and 260th Ave along CR 68 on July 22.
She also found a SHORT-EARED OWL at the Melo impoundment on July 28.
Shelley Steva visited the new impoundment north of the Wetland, Pines,
and Prairies Audubon Sanctuary on July 28 where she saw a variety of
ducks, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, BLACK TERN, and an UPLAND SANDPIPER.

Shelley Steva saw TURKEY VULTURE, SANDHILL CRANE, and COMMON RAVEN in
Pennington County on July 28.

On July 24, Shelley Steva and I found 17 TURKEY VULTURES on the ground
three miles north of the Pennington- Marshall County line just north of
the SEMM WMA in Marshall County. With them was an adult BALD EAGLE.

In Roseau County on July 24, we observed the following species at the
Skime WMA just north of Marshall County: BROAD-WINGED HAWK, OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, HERMIT THRUSH, GRAY CATBIRD, CEDAR WAXWING, WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW, and SCARLET TANAGER.

Thanks to Heidi Hughes, Sandy Aubol, and Shelley Steva for their
reports.
