Time is marching on and the season is about to change, though we are hoping for a long fall. The north central part of the state is no longer so dry, so be wary if you want to drive on the township roads - your vehicle will not stay clean. Roads that tend to be marginal may not be all that good after last night's deluge during which some places received 3 or more inches of driving rain in a very short time.
Here in Pennington County on August 26, I found a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER in the yard. On August 27, there was a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, CANADA WARBLER, and several ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS. Tonight, I saw a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH working on a sunflower seed near the window.
In Red Lake County at Huot on August 27, about 20 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were flycatching in the early evening. They were seen again the next day. Also seen in the woods nearby were EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, LEAST FLYCATCHER, CEDAR WAXWING, TENNESSEE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.
Shelley Steva was birding at the impoundment north of the Wetland, Pines, and Prairies Audubon Sanctuary on August 27. This impoundment straddles the Marshall- Polk County line. She reported 500 to 1000 shorebirds including KILLDEER, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, STILT SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, SANDERLING, WILSON'S SNIPE, and RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. Other species seen there included a variety of ducks, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, AMERICAN BITTERN, GREAT BLUE HERON, and SORA. Heidi Hughes also reported SPOTTED SANDPIPER and DUNLIN.
