This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November 3, 2011 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

This has been a quiet week in the northwest. With calm winds and mild temperatures, birds have largely stayed put. A weather change is coming this weekend which may drive out the rest of the migrants, and leave us with the winter residents.

Steve Midthune reported GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and HARRIS'S SPARROWS at Hamden Slough NWR in Becker County on October 31. Beau Shroyer saw a single SNOW BUNTING along the shore of Little Detroit Lake in Detroit Lakes on November 3.

Sandy Aubol saw an EASTERN TOWHEE in her yard in East Grand Forks, Polk County on November 1.

Here in Pennington County on October 29 , I saw a family of BALD EAGLES and 4 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES feeding on a deer carcass along CR 20. At home, a flock of COMMON REDPOLLS flew through the yard that day.

In Marshall County , I saw a NORTHERN HARRIER, several BALD EAGLES, and 2 SNOW BUNTINGS. A flock of about 100 COMMON REDPOLLS were feeding on the prairie grasses at the headquarters of Agassiz NWR on October 29.

Thanks to Beau Shroyer, Sandy Aubol, and Steve Midthune for their reports.
