This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 31st, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found on the 22nd by Peder Svingen just north of the Park Point Rowing Club in the Duluth harbor. Peder saw 146 CANAVASBACKS on the 24th at Park Point, an impressive total for northeastern Minnesota, as well as 845 REDHEADS on the 25th. Peder saw a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on the 24th at Allouez Bay in Superior, which may be same bird found by Jerry Niemi and others in the Duluth harbor last week. GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULL, ICELAND GULL, AND THAYER’S GULLS are still being seen in the Duluth harbor.
New arrivals in the area during the past week include COMMON LOON, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, WOOD DUCK, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, BELTED KINGFISHER, NORTHERN FLICKER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
