This is the Duluth Birding Report for March 15th, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The record-breaking warm weather during the past week has brought many new arrivals more typical of late March and early April. TRUMPETER SWANS, TURKEY VULTURES, NORTHERN HARRIERS, AMERICAN KESTRELS, KILLDEER, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL, HERMIT THRUSH, FOX SPARROWS, COMMON GRACKLES, and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were all reported from the area during the past few days.
GOLDEN EAGLES are being seen daily at the West Skyline Hawk Count, with 28 counted on the 15th as well as 451 BALD EAGLES. ICELAND GULLS, GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and THAYER'S GULLS continue to be seen at Canal Park in Duluth.
Mark Junghans and Ron Erpelding saw a SPRUCE GROUSE on the 10th in Lake County at mile marker 326 along MN Highway 1, north of CR 2. BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS continue to be seen in Duluth Township along the West Knife River Road (CR 231), 0.7 mile west of the Homestead Road (CR 42). Norma Malinowski reports that the flock in Ely by the wastewater treatment plant is also still present.
