This has been the first really warm week in the northwest. Migration is over, and now we are seeing the first of the season's baby birds. Of note this year is an increased number of cuckoos being heard and seen, perhaps a foretelling of another big caterpillar year next year.
Martin Kehoe reported from the Beltrami Island State Forest in Lake of the Woods County. Species seen there in June include a TRUMPETER SWAN pair with four cygnets. On June 3, Brown's Lake held 9 TRUMPETER SWANS and 19 TUNDRA SWANS still. Rounding out his list were SPRUCE GROUSE, mating SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, and families of GRAY JAYS with young. Brad Bolduan observed BOREAL CHICKADEES in the forest also on the weekend.
From Roseau County, Beth Siverhus reported RUFFED GROUSE, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, NORTHERN HARRIER , MARBLED GODWIT, GREAT HORNED OWL, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, BROWN THRASHER, WILSON'S WARBLER, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, and SCARLET TANAGER.
In Beltrami County, Brad Bolduan found a GREAT GRAY OWL along MN 72 north of Kelliher on June 2.
Ashley Hitt at Agassiz NWR reported a BUFFLEHEAD brood of 10 at Farmes Pool, a COMMON LOON at Parker Pool, a pair of SANDHILL CRANES with a colt on the refuge, GREEN HERON and RED-HEADED WOODPECKER this week. Shelley Steva visited the Agassiz Valley Impoundment on June 3 where she found numerous duck species, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, SANDHILL CRANES, UPLAND SANDPIPERS, 15 MARBLED GODWITS, WILSON'S PHALAROPES, EASTERN KINGBIRDS, and, at the Audubon Center, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER.
Shelley Steva found a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE in Polk County south of the Audubon Center.
Gary Tischer reported a HOUSE WREN in his yard in Thief River Falls, Pennington County, on June 5. They seem to be unusually numerous this year , as I heard three singing HOUSE WRENS while standing in one spot in our yard this week. On May 31, the last wave of warblers to hit our yard included a MOURNING WARBLER. A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was calling in our neighborhood this morning.
Dave Hochhalter in Becker County reported CEDAR WAXWINGS in Detroit Lakes this week.
