This is the Duluth Birding Report for June 11th, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
An out-of-range LEAST BITTERN was seen by Dee Kuder on the 7th in northern St. Louis County. It was found in a large wetland along FR 422, which is a short loop road off CR 24 about seven miles north of the Vermilion River. The bird had been recorded vocalizing on May 31st.
Andrew Nyhus saw a WESTERN KINGBIRD on the 6th in the Sax-Zim Bog along the Arkola Road (CR52), two miles east of CR 7. Andrew also saw four WHIMBRELS in Duluth on the 5th at Hearding Island off Park Point. Two AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were also seen there on the 5th by Peder Svingen. Peder also saw an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN on the 10th at Interstate Island.
Mike Steffes found several BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS in Tettegouche State Park on the 5th along the trails at the top of the ridge off the gravel service road at the northern edge of the park. Uwe Kausch has had a SANDHILL CRANE in Duluth Township off at the end of the Wildwood Road, one mile west of the Homestead Road (CR 42).
