This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 19, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. It has been a very hot week here in the northwest, though I hear not as hot as in the southern part of the state. Birds have been very active, especially at the bird bath. On July 18, Gary and Marion Otnes found a RUFF in Otter Tail County in the Mistinka backwaters. Directions are south on CR 1 from Fergus Falls to the intersection with 170th Ave where there were flooded fields ahead. Several species of shorebirds were there including one RUFF with a dark brown ruff. I do not know if the bird or the flooded fields are still there, although this was only yesterday. Mark Otnes discovered BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS at Dunton Locks County Park in Becker County on July 13. The birds were in the tram area and around the picnic shelter. In Clay County, Dennis Weisenborn found BLUE GROSBEAKS northeast of Glyndon near the intersection of 70th Ave N and 180th St . The birds were found two weeks ago, but were still there singing on July 14th. Other species in the area included EASTERN BLUEBIRD, LARK SPARROW, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE. Sandy Aubol reported DICKCISSELS at the East Grand Forks wastewater treatment ponds in Polk County on July 13. EARED GREBES and BLACK TERNS were also there. A single DICKCISSEL was singing from a round bale in an alfalfa field near the intersection of CR 7 and MN 32 in Pennington County on July 14. Heidi Hughes found ten DICKCISSELS at the Agassiz Valley impoundment in Marshall and Polk County on July 14. More than 100 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were also there, and SHORT-EARED OWLS are being seen on the grasslands nearby.
