This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, September 27, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. Migration of songbirds is on its last stages as the sparrows have arrived. Next we will see the migration of the waterfowl before finally the show ends. Fall color is nearing peak in the northwest, and the yellows and oranges are glorious right now. From Bemidji in Beltrami County, Pat DeWenter reported WOOD DUCKS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and DARK-EYED JUNCO on September 27. At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, Gregg Knutsen observed 20 SNOW GEESE on the west side of the refuge and some TUNDRA SWANS at Headquarters Pool on September 27. Jim Graham saw two CANADA WARBLERS around headquarters today also. Shelley Steva reported that a male NORTHERN CARDINAL was seen in Thief River Falls on September 27, and she has also seen a COOPER'S HAWK recently here. At our feeder east of the town, the WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and several FOX SPARROWS appeared around September 24. In Red Lake County, Shelley saw a PALM WARBLER in Oklee on September 21. Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks, Polk County, reported migrants sparrows in her yard on September 20. By September 24 the numbers had grown to 30 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, 9 HARRIS'S SPARROWS, and 2 FOX SPARROWS. Two WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS that were there earlier had already gone. Warblers this week in her area included ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, and BLACKPOLL. Dave Hochhalter reported NORTHERN FLICKERS in Detroit Lakes in Becker County on September 21. At Tamarac NWR, Kelly Blackledge reported DARK-EYED JUNCO and HARRIS'S SPARROW. Many TRUMPETER SWANS on Flat Lake can be seen from the historical marker on Bruce Boulevard in the refuge. Steve Midthune reported GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, LINCOLN 'S SPARROW and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW north of Lake Park on September 26. Marshall Howe in Hubbard County reported RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, DARK-EYED JUNCO, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW on September 26. Brad and Dee Ehlers in Otter Tail County reported their last sighting of RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD on September 22.
