Fall weather has descended on the northwest this week -dare we hope for a short reprieve next week? Seriously, the cool weather was welcomed by most, but we would have liked some rain too. Migration is moving along quickly, and color is starting to appear on the trees.
Charlene Nelson reported 2 immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS in Elbow Lake, Grant County on September 2. Also seen there were several LEAST FLYCATCHERS and in Perham, a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE.
From Dorset in Hubbard County, Marshall Howe observed 5 PINE WARBLERS, and a DARK-EYED JUNCO, and heard RED CROSSBILLS on August 31. On September 1, he reported NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER. A BROWN CREEPER was seen on September 3, and on the 5th, a BLACK-BILLEE CUCKOO, and several RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES.
Beau Shroyer saw a SNOWY EGRET flying over the Otter Tail River north of Frazee in the company of a GREAT EGRET on September 1.
In Norman County, Shelley Steva and I saw a TURKEY VULTURE on September 3, and at Gary Pines, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen.
Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks in Polk County on September 4, saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, WILSON'S WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, TENNESEEE WARBLER, and CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER.
Milt Blomberg and Roy Zimmerman found RED CROSSBILLS in a spruce tree across from the C-Store in Red Lake Falls in Red Lake County on September 2. Along with Ron Erpelding, they found 11 species of shorebirds at the Red Lake Falls WTP including LESSER YELLOWLEGS, STILT SANDPIPER, DUNLIN, SANDERLING, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, KILLDEER, WILSON'S SNIPE, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and SPOTTED SANDPIPER. Shelley Steva and I saw an OSPREY and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES in Red Lake County on September 3.
Shelley Steva reported that the female NORTHERN CARDINAL was seen again in her neighborhood in Thief River Falls, Pennington County on the weekend. Ron Erpelding found a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and HORNED GREBES at the Thief River Falls WTP on September 2. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen by Shelley Steva on September 6 in the city of Thief River Falls.
In Roseau County on September 1, Shelley Steva found 10 RED CROSSBILLS at DNR headquarters in Wannaska; two SOLITARY SANDPIPERS and one SWAINSON'S THRUSH were seen at Hayes Lake SP.
Kim Eckert reporting on the MBW trip in northwestern Minnesota on the weekend reported a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD at Springsteel Island north of Warroad, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in Warroad city park, and a cooperative NELSON'S SPARROW three miles west and three miles north of Roseau. At least 6 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen by the group hunting near the corner of 340th St and 440th Ave by the group.
