This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, September 13, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. Fall seems to have truly arrived with reports of possible frost in the northern part of the state, and color is appearing in the forests. For a time migration seemed to have slowed, or the birds were blown right over the northwest. After the winds of the past few days have died down, it looks as if migration is now happening. This morning I surprised a small flock of 15-20 NORTHERN FLICKERS along our road as I went to work in Thief River Falls, Pennington County. Shelley Steva found 15 SANDHILL CRANES along Red Lake County road 1 five miles east of Plummer on September 7. On September 12, she watched a MERLIN chasing a flock of 10 CEDAR WAXWINGS in Oklee. From East Grand Forks , Polk County, Sandy Aubol reported ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER on September 7, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER on September 9, and a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW on September 12. Thanks to Shelley Steva and Sandy Aubol for their reports. Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than Thursday each week, at [log in to unmask] OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, September 20, 2012.
