This is the Duluth Birding Report for October 5th, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A female HARLEQUIN DUCK was seen on the 5th by Kim Eckert and others at Agate Bay in Two Harbors. They also saw an adult and juvenile ROSS'S GOOSE at the Two Harbors golf course. Mark Otnes saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 1st at Knife River in Lake County. A BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE was seen on the 29th at Larsmont west of Two Harbors.
Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingman saw a ROSS'S GOOSE on the 28th at the Lutsen sewage ponds in Cook County. They also relocated the female HARLEQUIN DUCK and AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN in the Grand Marais harbor and the WESTERN GREBE at the Silver Bay marina. They saw a SPRUCE GROUSE on the 28th along the South Brule Road about a mile east of the Lima Mountain Road.
Dave, Pam and Lars Benson saw two SURF SCOTERS and a BLACK SCOTER on the 5th at Paradise Beach east of Grand Marais. They also saw an adult THAYER'S GULL at Taconite Harbor and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and the first COMMON REDPOLLS of the season at the Caribou River about 100 yards from the wayside.
Mike Hendrickson saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 5th at the Park Point Recreation Area. One was also seen on the 27th at the Hawk Ridge main overlook. A SHORT-EARED OWL flew by the main overlook on the 4th. Chris Mansfield saw two FRANKLIN'S GULLS on the 1st at the Park Point Recreation Area.
