This is the Duluth Birding Report for October 12th, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The SAY'S PHOEBE at the McQuade Road public boat access east of Duluth was last reported on the 11th near the restroom building. It could not be relocated 45 minutes of mid-day searching on the 12th.
A CLARK'S NUTCRACKER was seen flying by the Hawk Ridge main overlook on the 12th. This is only the second record for St. Louis County, and one of the few recent records for the state. The first VARIED THRUSH report of the season was a bird banded at Hawk Ridge on the 7th.
Jan and Larry Kraemer, Erik Bruhnke and others found a HARLEQUIN DUCK at Canal Park on the 9th and a RED-THROATED LOON and two SURF SCOTERS at the Park Point Recreation Area. Mike Hendrickson found two BLACK SCOTERS on the 10th at Leif Erickson Park near 10th Avenue East in Duluth.
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen on the 8th and 9th at Knife River just to the east of Emily's Restaurant along Scenic Highway 61.
