We are definitely into late fall birding, but some interesting birds were reported this week. Be on the lookout for vagrants due to the hurricane on the east coast. You never know what may have been blown off course.
At the Thief River Falls wastewater treatment ponds on October 28, we found a few swans which we did not identify as to species, and a large number of CANADA GEESE. Also there were a few ducks including NORTHERN SHOVELER and GREATER SCAUP.
Sandy Aubol had a visit from a EVENING GROSBEAK male in her East Grand Forks yard in Polk County on November 1. Yesterday, October 31 she had the first BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS there. Other species seen in the area included SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, NORTHERN SHRIKE, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, a flock of COMMON REDPOLLS, and some PINE SISKINS. Leon Thoreson on his farm near Climax reported a PILEATED WOODPECKER, 8 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, HARRIS'S SPARROWS, many DARK-EYED JUNCOS, a RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and some PINE SISKINS on October 28.
From southern Mahnomen County, Kristy May in Waubun saw 8 EVENING GROSBEAKS , mostly male, at her bird bath on November 1. Other species seen there included AMERICAN ROBIN, CHIPPING SPARROW, COMMON REDPOLLS , and HOUSE FINCH.
Steve Midthune reported ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and NORTHERN SHRIKE at Hamden Slough NWR in Becker County on November 1. At Tamarac NWR, there were many migrating GREEN-WINGED TEAL and some COMMON REDPOLLS. Dave and Betty Hochhalter observed RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, NORTHERN CARDINAL, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in Detroit Lakes this week.
From Hubbard County , Marshall Howe reported a flock of 250 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE near Dorset on October 29. He found a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and a late NORTHERN FLICKER in southern Hubbard County on October 30. At Dorset there were 15 PINE SISKINS at the feeder , along with AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and DARK-EYED JUNCOS.
Marshall Howe also saw a single SNOW BUNTING in western Cass County on October 30.
Ryan Sansness found 70-100 SANDHILL CRANES on October 30 south of the intersection of MN 210 and I- 29 in Otter Tail County.
