This is the Duluth Birding Report for December 29th, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found on the 25th by Karl Bardon on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry. Based on plumage characteristics, this is probably the same male returning to the area for the fifth consecutive winter. GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, THAYER’S GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and ICELAND GULLS are still being seen regularly at Canal Park.
The VARIED THRUSH at 47th Avenue East and Oakley Street in the Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth was relocated on the 28th by Tony Mitchell. The VARIED THRUSH in LaPrairie in Itasca County is still being reported by Shawn Conrad as of the 28th.
A total of 41 species was seen on the Two Harbors Christmas Bird Count on the 22nd, including RED-NECKED GREBE, HORNED GREBE, and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER on Lake Superior, a SNOWY OWL in the Two Harbors railroad yards, a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE on the Stanley Road west of Two Harbors, and three RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS.
