This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, December 6, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888. We thought that winter weather had finally come, but now the snow is all gone, and cold remains. That may be remedied this weekend as more is promised. Winter birds and northern specialties are being seen in many locations making birding very interesting. Brad and Dee Ehlers in Otter Tail County reported 500 TRUMPETER SWANS in corn fields south of Ottertail on CR 78 on November 30 and still there on December 6. In Fergus Falls, they saw 22 COMMON REDPOLLS on December 6. Marshall Howe in Hubbard County on December 4 saw a dark phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and on the 5th , eight PINE GROSBEAKS came to his yard. December 6th , he saw 40 COMMON REDPOLLS, and one HOARY REDPOLL was among the group. Dave and Betty Hochhalter on November 30 reported a NORTHERN CARDINAL, and both PINE GROSBEAK and EVENING GROSBEAK in Detroit Lakes in Becker County. Lori Naumann reported a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in Detroit Lakes for some time near 1215 Long Ave. From Mahnomen County, Kristy May reported RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, CEDAR WAXWINGS, PINE GROSBEAKS, PURPLE FINCH, and COMMON REDPOLLS this week in Waubun. Sandy Aubol reports that a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW is visiting her feeder in East Grand Forks in Polk County since December 2. Vanessa Lane was at the Audubon Center near Warren on December 2 where she saw a LONG-EARED OWL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, PINE GROSBEAK, and COMMON REDPOLLS. Donna and Leon Thoreson near Climax on November 29 had BLACK-B ILLED MAGPIES, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, SNOW BUNTINGS, and COMMON REDPOLLS at their feeders. On December 4 seven GRAY PARTRIDGE were seen near their driveway. Heidi Hughes saw 60 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Warren , Marshall County, on December 6. From Agassiz NWR , Lynda Knutsen reported BALD EAGLE, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, and COMMON REDPOLLS. Here in Pennington County, a BROWN CREEPER has been seen several times in the yard, most recently on December 1. Tim Driscoll brought 4 of his students to the Beltrami Island State Forest on December 1. While there, Vayla Van Dyke, Mark Jackson, Krista Kenyon, and Jordan Duvall saw many northern forest birds. In Beltrami County they reported BALD EAGLES, 36 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, GREAT HORNED OWL, NORTHERN HAWK OWL, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, NORTHERN SHRIKE and SNOW BUNTINGS. Lake of the Woods County sightings by Tim Driscoll's group included RUFFED GROUSE, 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, BARRED OWL, GRAY JAY, and PINE GROSBEAKS. Carol Parker reported a male NORTHERN CARDINAL at her feeder in Warroad in Roseau County on December 3. Thanks to all who sent in sightings this week.
