This is the Duluth Birding Report for December 21st, 2012 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Despite steady rain throughout the day, a total of 57 species was seen on the Duluth Christmas Bird Count on the 15th, including a VARIED THRUSH at 47th Avenue East and Oakley Street in the Lakeside neighborhood and the first RUDDY DUCK for the count, seen in the Duluth Harbor. Also seen in the harbor and at Canal Park were three HOODED MERGANSERS, a RING-NECKED DUCK, five GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, eight THAYER'S GULLS, eight GLAUCOUS GULLS, three ICELAND GULLS, and two SNOWY OWLS. A RED-NECKED GREBE and a HORNED GREBE were seen on Lake Superior at 21st Avenue East, and a LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen out from Glensheen Mansion. The VARIED THRUSH in Lakeside was relocated on the 18th, and Jan and Larry Kraemer found a TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE at the same location on the 20th.
The WESTERN GREBE at Agate Bay in Two Harbors was relocated on the 16th, along with a RED-NECKED GREBE and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER. A HORNED GREBE was seen on the 16th at the mouth of the Stewart River.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen on the 20th along the Rice Lake Road about a mile south of the Martin Road. Paul Sundberg saw a SNOWY OWL on the 19th in the Grand Marais harbor. Warren Nelson and others found a SNOWY OWL on the 21st in Aitkin County along US Highway 169, 0.7 mile north of Aitkin.
