This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, January 3, 2013 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. It has been cold during the last week, but the weather has been uneventful , allowing the holiday travelers to go safely and the bird counters to get good counts. From Otter Tail County on December 30, Brad and Dee Ehlers reported about 400 TRUMPETER SWANS at the outlet of Rush Lake, and good numbers of SNOW BUNTINGS and COMMON REDPOLLS in the county. Marshall Howe observed RED CROSSBILLS northeast of Lake George in Hubbard County on December 28 and, on the 29th, a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK in Park Rapids. In Mahnomen County, Kristy May reported PILEATED WOODPECKER , RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, NORTHERN CARDINAL, a male RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, and PINE GROSBEAKS in Waubun on January 2. Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks, Polk County, a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and a PILEATED WOODPECKER visited her yard on New Year's Day. Several AMERICAN ROBINS were seen in town. On January 3, a BROWN CREEPER appeared in her yard. On a short trip to Grand Forks on New Year's Day, I saw several small flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS in Polk County. In Pennington County, I saw a BROWN CREEPER inching up one of our trees east of Thief River Falls. 65 WILD TURKEYS were seen scratching up the dirt in a field along CR 7 on New Year's Day. Heidi Hughes saw a SNOWY OWL north of Kennedy in Marshall County along Us 75 on January 2. Several flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS were also seen. Marshall Howe saw 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Bemidji, Beltrami County on December 28. Beth Siverhus saw a GREAT GRAY OWL near mile marker 43 along US 72 , and another just south of the Beltrami-Lake of the Woods county line along US 72. In Kittson County , Heidi Hughes saw 6 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE near Halma on January 2. Beth Siverhus reported WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, COMMON GRACKLE, and COMMON REDPOLLS in Warroad , Roseau County on December 31. The Roseau CBC was held on December 29 where 30 species were found. Among them were 114 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, one EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in the city of Roseau, 5 NORTHERN HAWK OWLS , 5 GREAT GRAY OWLS, 5 NORTHERN SHRIKES, and 20 PINE GROSBEAKS. In Lake of the Woods County, Beth Siverhus found a NORTHERN SHRIKE along MN 72 north of CR 7, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL at mile marker 49 along MN 72, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK a quarter miles north of mile marker 52 along MN 72, and another NORTHERN SHRIKE a half mile north of the Bog walk on MN 72. The Beltrami Island CBC was held on December 30 where 21 species were found including one GREAT GRAY OWL, 6 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS , 2 AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS, 5 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 45 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS , and 66 RED CROSSBILLS. The Baudette CBC was held December 31 and found 31 species including two BARRED OWLS, 3 BOREAL CHICKADEES , 8 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 8 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, one HOARY REDPOLL , and 163 EVENING GROSBEAKS Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Brad and Dee Ehlers, Heidi Hughes, Kristy May, Marshall Howe, and Sandy Aubol for their reports.
