This is the Duluth Birding Report for January 11th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
The SLATY-BACKED GULL first found on December 30th at the Superior Entry was relocated on the 5th by Mike Hendrickson and others at Canal Park in Duluth, but I have not heard any reports since. The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen on both sides of the state border at Superior Entry on the 5th. GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS, THAYER’S GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULLS, and ICELAND GULLS are still being seen regularly at Canal Park.
Several species of interest are being seen at the Sax-Zim Bog, including NORTHERN HAWK OWL and GREAT GRAY OWLS near McDavitt Road, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE along CR 7 just south of the Sax Road (CR 28), HOARY REDPOLLS at several locations including the Blue Spruce Road feeders (one mile north of CR 133) and the Owl Avenue feeders (0.5 mile north of Overton Road), BOREAL CHICKADEES at the Admiral Road feeders (about 3.5 miles north of the Sax Road) and along the Arkola Road (CR 52) east of Owl Avenue, and EVENING GROSBEAKS at the Blue Spruce Road feeders.
Alison Clarke reported a VARIED THRUSH on the 6th in her yard on Ridgewood Road south of 4th Street and west of 34th Avenue East in Duluth. Don Kienholz found an EASTERN BLUEBIRD on the 7th, on Pittsburg Avenue west of Mesaba Avenue.
The VARIED THRUSH in LaPrairie in Itasca County is still being reported by Shawn Conrad as of the 9th.
