This is the Duluth Birding Report for February 14th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

An adult BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was seen by Kim Risen on the 10th at Flood Bay east of Two Harbors. This was probably the same individual found on the 3rd at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors by Chris Wood. Ben Wieland and Dale Yerger saw a flock of 60 LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 14th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors. The WESTERN GREBE was relocated here on the 13th.

Bruce and Susan Fall saw an immature KING EIDER on the 10th along Scenic Highway 61, 0.3 mile east of the Lakewood Road, but it has not been relocated since. Ron Erpelding and others saw the BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS on the 8th at South 22nd Avenue East in Duluth. Tony Mitchell found a TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE in the Lakeside neighborhood on the 9th, on Oakley Street a half block west of 47th Avenue East.

BOREAL OWLS continue to be seen along the North Shore, especially along Scenic Highway 61 between Duluth and Knife River. Recent sightings have mainly been along Scenic 61 between Homestead Road and Alseth Road near Tom's Logging Camp. A NORTHERN HAWK OWL is still being seen along the Martin Road (CR 9) on the north side of Duluth, about a mile west of the Jean-Duluth Road. A SNOWY OWL has been seen at Canal Park, but I don’t have an exact location.

GREAT GRAY OWLS continue to move into the area, with recent sightings on the Homestead Road at the Old North Shore Road, on the Ryan Road at the Old North Shore Road, on the Lismore Road at the Ryan Road, on the Strand Road between the North Tischer and the Lester River Road, along MN Highway 61 just west of Little Marais, along Lake County Road 2 about 10 miles north of Two Harbors, and several sightings in the Finland area.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, February 21st.

The telephone number of the Duluth Rare Bird Alert is 218-834-2858. Information about bird sightings may be left following the recorded message.
