This is the Duluth Birding Report for April 26th, 2013 sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
An AMERICAN AVOCET was found on the 21st by JG Bennett in the Duluth Harbor near 27th Avenue West. Two FRANKLIN'S GULLS and a RUDDY DUCK have been seen in the same area during the past week, as well as an apparent ROSS’S/SNOW GOOSE hybrid. Chris Mansfield saw a CACKLING GOOSE on the 21st near the Park Point Rowing Club. A third-cycle GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on the 20th and 24th at Hearding Island in the Duluth Harbor.
Erik Bruhnke saw two RED-THROATED LOONS on the 22nd at Brighton Beach in east Duluth and Jan and Larry Kraemer saw five there on the 24th. Jan and Larry also saw 40 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS on the 25th on the Western Waterfront Trail in west Duluth. Alison Clarke relocated the VARIED THRUSH on the 21st in her yard at 226 Ridgewood Road in East Duluth.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was photographed on the 20th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors, but it has not been relocated. Twenty LONG-TAILED DUCKS were at Agate Bay on the 21st.
GREAT GRAY OWLS are still being seen in the Duluth area and along the North Shore, with recent reports from Ridgewood Road in east Duluth, the Lester River Road in Lakewood Township, the Wildwood Road and the West Knife River Road in Duluth Township, Lake County Road 3 east of Two Harbors, and Cook County Road 7 west of Grand Marais. The SNOWY OWL in Two Harbors was seen again on the 20th in the industrial park on the north side of town.
Other recent spring arrivals in the past week include BROAD-WINGED HAWK, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, WILSON'S SNIPE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, BELTED KINGFISHER, WINTER WREN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
