This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday May 9th, 2013.

In Carver County, John Cyrus found a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER on May 5th and it has been seen each day this week including today. Look near the northern edge of the Carver Creek Loop of the Rapids Lake Unit about 50 yards west of the walking bridge.

On the 9th, Warren Nelson reported a PAINTED BUNTING coming to some feeders east of Aitkin. From Aitkin, take state highway 47 east for about six miles to Aitkin County Road 5, then north on County Road 5 for about 6/10 mile to mailbox number 35660. This is the home of Chuck and Connie Petterson. Their feeders can be seen from their driveway and the bunting seems to prefer the feeders on the north side of their home.

The SAY'S PHOEBE found in Polk County on April 30th was still present on the 8th. It's being seen near the DNR office on state highway 32, three miles south of U.S. Highway 2.

On the 3rd, a male LAZULI BUNTING was at Jim Gay's feeders in Woodbury, Washington County. Birders have been welcomed to stop by and visit.

A group of birders counted 355 RED-THROATED LOONS on Lake Superior in Duluth on the 8th. To put this in perspective, the previous record high count for Minnesota was 39. The loons were counted along Park Point from Canal Park to the Sky Harbor Airport.

John Gisslison found a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON in Little Canada, Ramsey County, on the 2nd. It was low to the ground near Savage Lake. This is south of the junction of Little Canada Road and County Drive.

Tom Dahlen, Chris Thiem, and Chad Heins found about a hundred SMITH'S LONGSPURS at the Lincoln WPA on May 5th. This is on the east side of Blue Earth County Road 32 and south of highway 60.

In Mcleod County, a GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE has been southwest of Hutchinson since the 3rd. Go south of town for three miles to county road 18. Turn west and drive five and a third miles to fire call #24495. Park in the large driveway and listed for the bird near the Austrian pines.

The NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD reported last week continues to be seen near the Duluth Rowing Club of Park Point. Chris Brown reported another on the 6th from his yard in Nowthen, Anoka County. And a sampling of other recent reports includes LEAST BITTERN, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, WHIP-POOR-WILL, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, WILSON'S WARBLER, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, HENSLOW'S SPARROW, and ORCHARD ORIOLE.
